For over a decade, AstraZeneca’s patent protecting Nexium has been a controversial issue, often turning a blue, white-collar man into a vulnerable and self-conscious victim of the health-care system’s widespread overprescribing of prescription drugs.
The controversy surrounding generic drug Nexium has also contributed to concerns about a widespread rise in heartburn. In 2003, the FDA had to oversee the approval of a heartburn drug that would be available in the United States through generic versions of the drug, AstraZeneca’s own company, under a $4-billion-a-year marketing contract.
AstraZeneca’s blockbuster heartburn drug has long been a subject of debate and litigation. AstraZeneca filed a lawsuit in Delaware state court alleging the company knew or should have known about the “hidden side effects” of Nexium, or esomeprazole, a drug used to treat heartburn. The lawsuit claims Nexium is the “direct cause of heartburn” and is only the “direct cause” for other side effects. A judge has ruled that the drug’s “direct cause” is the “direct cause of” Nexium’s increased risk of heart attack and stroke, according to.
AstraZeneca also is facing a similar claim in the United States. A lawsuit filed in 2013 in the United States alleges the company mis marketed and dispensed the drug to patients who had been diagnosed with heartburn for more than a year. It alleged the drug was not used to treat heartburn and instead was used to treat acid reflux, a heart condition characterized by frequent acid regurgitation, a condition that may be linked to heartburn and other heartburn symptoms.
The U. S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) is also in a similar position in the United Kingdom, where the company is seeking to protect its intellectual property rights. The UK has already taken legal action against AstraZeneca in Pennsylvania, where a generic version of the drug is being developed. The patent for the new generic is still valid in the United Kingdom, and the company has no plans to appeal the validity of the patent.
The FDA has also argued the drug was used to treat other types of chronic heartburn. The drug, which contains Esomeprazole, is used to treat heartburn and acid regurgitation, a condition characterized by frequent backflow of acid from the stomach into the esophagus. In the United Kingdom, the generic drug is still being marketed for the treatment of acid reflux.
The company’s proposed lawsuit seeks to prevent the FDA from issuing a warning about the dangerous side effects of Nexium, as well as to prevent generic companies from marketing a drug that is the only one that treats heartburn. The company is seeking to recover millions of dollars in lost sales.
In a statement to theTimes, AstraZeneca’s CEO, Pascal Soriot, said the “full and fair settlement process that we have been working to secure is being overseen by the FDA.” AstraZeneca declined to comment.

Eli Lilly has just released an official statement saying that its prescription drug, Nexium, is a safe and effective option for treating symptoms of acid reflux disease (GERD) and other heartburn conditions.
The company is also pleased that it was able to get a final approval for its anti-acid drug, called Prevacid, for its US distribution in the United States.
"We are very pleased with the results of the study and we will continue to make the necessary changes in our marketing strategy," Lilly said in a statement.
Lilly will launch the new drug in September and will provide a free trial of Prevacid.
The company said that it would also continue to be committed to offering patients free of cost for the study and its full prescribing information, including all symptoms, to avoid patient anxiety and side effects.
Lilly is currently conducting the trial, and the results are expected to be available in the second quarter of this year.
Lilly is currently conducting a full clinical trial for its Nexium treatment for GERD, which is used in adults with the condition.
Lilly said that the company's strategy to get the study completed was to conduct the full treatment duration of the trial, with no restrictions on the number of patients who can participate.
Lilly will also make a presentation to its patients regarding the potential risks associated with the use of Nexium. Lilly will also be conducting its own in-depth clinical trial for its Nexium treatment, which is currently in its third year of clinical trials.

Nexium 24HR tablets contain esomeprazole, a proton pump inhibitor. Nexium 24HR tablets has also been shown in trials to reduce the risk of developing heart attack, stroke and fluid retention in patients taking at least one dose of this drug within the 14-day emergency department.
Nexium 24HR tablets are indicated for the treatment of mild to moderate acute reflux oesophagitis, healing of ulcers caused by chronic alcoholism or other addictive disorders, and for healing of reflux oesophagitis caused by chronic alcoholism. They should be used in conjunction with a reduced-calorie diet, exercise, healthy sleep, smoking cessation, dietary changes and a reduced-fat diet, and should be used in patients at any age.
